On April 15, President Yoshihiko Noda exchanged views with a bipartisan delegation of representatives and senators visiting Japan from the US. Eight bipartisan lawmakers, including Representative Frank Pallone (Democrat, New Jersey) and Representative Diana DeGette (Democrat, Colorado), visited the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan headquarters.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Noda stated, "I have been firmly committed to asserting that the Japan-US alliance is the cornerstone of Japan's diplomacy and security," and touched on the background to this, mentioning the experience of many Japanese people being saved by the US military's Operation Tomodachi at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake, saying, "I will never forget the kindness shown to us at that time."On the other hand, referring to the tariff policy of the Trump administration, he said, "I never expected that we would face such a national crisis from the United States, which is supposed to be our ally," and emphasized, "This is a common feeling regardless of whether we are in the ruling or opposition party."Representing the Constitutional Democratic Party were Policy Research Council Chairman Shigenori Kazuhiko, Next Minister for Foreign Affairs Takemasa Koichi, and International Department Director-General Gemma Kentaro, and there was a lively exchange of opinions, focusing on nuclear power and energy policy and the priorities of tariff measures.
