Statement on the occasion of the inauguration of the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America

Yoshihiko Noda
President
The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan

On the occasion of the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States, on behalf of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, I extend my sincere congratulations and respect.

The international situation is more problematic than it has been since President Trump's first term in office, with North Korea's frequent and sophisticated missile launches, China's increasingly regular and active activities in the East and South China Seas, as well as Russia's aggression in Ukraine and the conflict and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Divisions in the international community are also deepening, making international cooperation for the rule of law and the maintenance of a peaceful and stable order difficult.

Under these circumstances, more than ever, the world must confront transnational issues such as peace, the environment, poverty, and inequality together. What is required of the United States, as a developed country, is a fair and just attitude toward maintaining freedom, the rule of law, fundamental human rights, and respect for diversity, as well as efforts to overcome divisions. I hope that President Trump will use his past experience to play an active role in a wide range of fields.

During the first term in office, President Trump built a good relationship with the late Prime Minister Abe and has shown a deep understanding of the importance of the Japan-U.S. alliance. I strongly hope that Japan and the United States will continue to deepen their cooperation in all aspects of security, the economy, and global issues, further deepening the multi-layered and strongly developed Japan-U.S. alliance, and contributing together to peace and prosperity in the international community.
